During a recent meeting of the Delta County Commissioners Court Delta County Sheriff Ricky Smith offered his input on the recent research his officers, Delta County Attorney Jay Garrett, Delta County Clerk Jane Jones and residents have assisted in coming to a firm conclusion on the status of the County being a closed range.
“We have spent a great deal of time researching this issue – struggling to find laws and amendments from 1906. In conclusion with Attorney Jay Garrett we are closed range,” said Sheriff Ricky Smith, contradictory to what was stated in Court on May 11. With this farmers must fence in cattle.
“We are treating Delta County as it is closed from a law enforcement standpoint,” said Sheriff Smith, based on the County Attorney’s opinion of the statues. This topic has seen lots of debate.
Precinct 2 Commissioner Gary Anderson brought up the safety issue regarding the tile steps on the Courthouse. Many citizens expressed concerns with how slick the steps were in the rain for voting. It was suggested to look into finding a paint that would have more grip than the tiles, and Sheriff Smith offered to assist with inmate labor.
