Dogettes take Bi-District Trophy

In the words of Cooper Dogette Head Basketball Coach Nicole Anderson, “a win is a win, is a win” despite how rough it was. A foul ridden ball game Monday proved to be to the Dogettes advantage as they sank 14 of their 25 from the line. Cooper claimed their 38-29 victory over Daingerfield to carry away the Bi-District trophy Monday night in Prairiland.

Tentatively Cooper will play in Mount Pleasant on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. against winner of Alba-Golden/Farmersville game for the Area round of the basketball playoffs.

Following the lead of Dogette starters Danielle Hollins, Sydnye Worden, McKayla Harmon, Monica Stevenson and Taylor Anderson, the opponent wasn’t able to score until almost four minutes had ticked off the first quarter clock. With every point made the large crowd of Cooper fans exclaimed. Cooper took an early lead 8-4 over the Daingerfield Lady Tigers behind lead scoring duo of Harmon and Stevenson.

By halftime Daingerfield had cut the score back to a three point difference with Cooper’s 15-12 advantage. However the second half with the trophy on the line it became a heated game. The Dogettes rallied in the third quarter to take a 29-17 lead with Harmon popping in four baskets.

Then the technical fouling came into play on both sides of the ball. Each foul point became more and more critical. With just over four minutes remaining Cooper only had a four point lead. Dogette Danielle Hollins lined up her foul shots and sank three of four. This sealed the 38-29 win for Cooper.

“We will take it – ugly – whatever, but we will take a good win. It was a physical game for sure,” said Coach Nicole Anderson. “I think for the most part with all the physical play we were able to keep our composure. Overall I think we did a good job.”

The Dogettes took on the De Kalb Lady Bears last Friday determining second in the district. They easily routed De Kalb in a 41-28 finish with combination shooting from Stevenson and Worden of 13 points apiece.
