Crossroads Music Company attendees got a double take this weekend as Grammy award winners Terri Hendrix along with longtime music collaborator legendary steel guitar player and music producer Lloyd Maines gave not only a toe-tapping performance at Saturday night’s concert but offered ticket holders a special unplugged singers/songwriters workshop on the art of crafting a song on Sunday afternoon at Sulphur Springs City Hall Chamber Listening Room.
“Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines are two of Texas’ most accomplished, talented musical treasures,” said Gus Gustafson, Crossroads Music Company owner. “You can feel all the positive energy as soon as those two enter a room!”
In her interview with Matt Meinke of KETR’s Notably Texan, Hendrix talks about her dedication to music and art. Known for her Grammy award winning co-write on The Dixie Chicks song "Little Jack Slade," Hendrix has released 14 albums in 20 years. Her resume includes a vast number of awards from Best Folk Act, Songwriter of the Year, Female Entertainer of the Year and many more. This was the San Marcos native’s first time in Sulphur Springs.
“I have a love for all things faith,” said Hendrix during Saturday’s show which led into the performance of her CD cover song “The Spiritual Kind.” She is a firm supporter of OYOU (“Own Your Own Universe”) which is a 501c3 non-profit community arts center project based in San Marcos.
On her website, Hendrix says, “Rather than just blow into town, set up, and leave, I want to blow into town and make a difference on a greater scale.” Ideally, she and Maines like to have the opportunity to not only “write and produce new material, but to engage with different communities through teaching music workshops.”
“Few people are as important to the development of Texas music over the last 30 years as Lloyd Maines. As a Grammy award-winning producer and musician, the Lubbock-born Maines has played an instrumental role in the creation of some of the Lone Star State's most famous and beloved albums,” says Hendrix on her website terrihendrix.com. “Maines began his recording and producing career in 1974. Over the past 40 years, Maines has worked on approximately four-thousand albums alongside some of the most significant figures in country, rock and Texas music.”
Maines was recently inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame.
“The induction was for perfect attendance,” Maines joked his wife of 45 years said as he revealed his secret to his long marriage. “I have been smothering my wife with cleverness.” So it wasn’t too surprising when he was completely fascinated by the glass bathrooms downtown Sulphur Springs.
Maines and Hendrix have been performing together for 18 years.
“It is never too late to write a song or learn to play,” added Hendrix. She has been doing her own record label in San Marcos since 1997. Her music is full of plenty of life advice as her “blues harp” otherwise known as a harmonica filled the quaint atmosphere of the room. Maines noted she learned to play the instrument by checking out a book from the library. Together they also performed the ballad “If I had a daughter” in which she charmed the listeners with the lyrics “If I had a daughter, I’d teach her to hold her head high, And strut through this world as a more than instead of a less than, She’d trust her voice, Speak her mind, And seek the truth, ’Cause if it talks like a duck and walks like a duck, Then yes, it might be a skunk.”

“The concert was great, and the workshop was magical,” said Gustafson, who is also the events coordinator for the City of Sulphur Springs Community Development Department. “Much wisdom transferred from Hendrix and Maines to the workshop participants, followed by memorable performances of musical works in progress! It was a great weekend for Sulphur Springs musical celebrations!”
They ended the concert with a special treat for listeners as Gustafson and Lindy Hearne took the stage with Hendrix and Maines for a crowd-pleasing finale.
