Dreiling will be new Greenville mayor

There will be four new faces on the Greenville City Council, as an incumbent met defeat during Saturday’s election, while another newcomer as elected to the Greenville Independent School District Board of Trustees.

David Dreiling is the new Mayor of the City of Greenville, while Jerry Ransom was elected to an unexpired term in Place 1 and former Greenville City Attorney Brent Money best Renee Francey to claim the Place 5 seat.

Dreiling received 1,459 votes (63.66 percent) to defeat Dan Perkins, who received 833 votes (36.34 percent). Perkins had stepped down from his Place 1 seat on the Greenville City Council to run for the post, after incumbent Mayor Steve Reid chose not to seek re-election.

“I think that it was a good race,” Dreiling said, adding he is ready to build on the business growth in the city. “We’re going to continue the growth the past few years. We’re going to improve the city for everybody.”

Perkins issued a statement following the election, thanking all of his supporters, his wife and family and the employees of the City of Greenville, and congratulating Dreiling on the win.

“I wish him the best as the Mayor of Greenville,” Perkins said. “I also want to congratulate all of those who were elected to the City Council. It is an honor and privilege toserve on the Council. I look forward to the new Council working together for the good of the entire City.”

Ransom claimed 590 votes (67.27 percent) to win the unexpired term in Place 1, besting Dave Stewart’s 287 votes (32.73 percent).

The closest race of the night was for the Place 5 seat on the council, where Money received 138 votes (58.72 percent) to Francey’s 97 votes (41.28 percent).

Cedric Dean was unopposed in running for the Place 6 seat on the council.

John C. Kelso won the Place 5 seat on the Greenville ISD Board, receiving 185 votes (64.01 percent) to Thomas C. Tillotson’s 104 votes (35.99 percent).
