College Station, TX –

The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents has formally appointed Dr. Dan Jones as the next President of Texas A&M University-Commerce.

From a news release written at the A&M System offices:

The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents has named Dr. Dan R. Jones as the 11th president of Texas A&M University-Commerce. The Board of Regents made the announcement on Wednesday following a telephonic meeting.

Dr. Jones, who was selected as the sole finalist for the position at the March Board of Regents meeting, presently is provost and vice president for academic affairs, chief student affairs officer and professor of English at Texas A&M International University in Laredo. He will begin his duties as president at A&M-Commerce on July 1.

"Leadership at today's colleges and universities requires a vast range of experiences, and Dan Jones has the necessary background and expertise to take A&M-Commerce to the top of the charts among regional institutions of higher education," said Bill Jones, chairman of the Board of Regents.

Prior to becoming provost at Texas A&M International, Dr. Jones served in a variety of leadership roles at the University of Houston-Downtown from 1985-2003, including dean and interim dean of University College, associate dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and professor and assistant chair of the Department of English. He also was instructor and student publications adviser at Casper College in Casper, Wyo., from 1982-1985.

As A&M-Commerce's chief executive officer, Dr. Jones will supervise more than 1,100 employees, manage a $97.6-million annual budget and provide vision for a comprehensive curriculum for 8,879 students.

"Dr. Jones has an extraordinary record as a leader in higher education in a variety of roles, and we are very fortunate to have him moving up the ladder within the Texas A&M System," said Dr. Michael D. McKinney, chancellor of the Texas A&M System.
