SULPHUR SPRINGS - The body of a fallen soldier from Yantis will be received by his parents today following a deadly attack on the man’s unit in Afghanistan.

23-year-old Sgt. Tanner Higgins died Saturday morning from injuries he suffered while under enemy fire, the Department of Defense reports.

Higgins is a 2007 graduate of Sulphur Springs High School. He joined the U.S. Army right out of high school, rapidly becoming a Ranger, as noted in this 2009 article in the Sulphur Springs News-Telegram.

Higgins leaves behind a wife, Shelby Allen, also of Yantis. They married last October.

He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, at Hunter Army Airfield, Fort Stewart, Ga.
