Equity Center lawsuit gains 100th school and counting

AUSTIN - More Than 100 Texas School Districts have now joined the Equity Center’s lawsuit, which is expected to be filed sometime next month.

The litigation will challenge the current school finance system in Texas, and seek a more equitable formula for distributing funding to schools.

Within the past few weeks, trustees have chosen whether to pay up to $1 per their school’s student weighted average daily attendance (WADA). Per-student funding across the Texas ranges from under $5,000 to over $10,000, even though state accountability standards are applied to all children uniformly.

Local districts who’ve agreed to put funding toward the lawsuit include Commerce, Bonham, Greenville and Paris. A complete list of Equity Center plaintiff districts will be released next week following the statewide school board convention in Austin.

The Equity Center is a non-profit advocacy organization that was founded in 1982 to promote fair funding for all Texas school districts, regardless of their wealth. They have 690 member school districts.
