Commerce – A benefit for a Commerce High School student who suffers from kidney disease is scheduled for this Saturday.
16-year-old junior Kamryn Smith was diagnosed with the illness at age 14.
Ruby Hudson is a friend of the family. She says, "They [doctors] told him that he'd probably be 20 years old before anything could happen to him, and six months ago his mother went in to get him up for school and she had to rush him to Children's Hospital. She was told then that both kidneys are gone."
According to Hudson, Smith is on dialysis three times a week.
"He is on the kidney waiting list, but they haven't found him a kidney yet."
Saturday's benefit, beginning at 11 a.m. from City Park, is being conducted by the National Transplant Assistance Fund. The organization is a leader in fundraising assistance and support for transplant and catastrophic injury.
A $5 donation is suggested, and will include a meal, live music, a raffle, plus a special presentation by the Commerce Fire Department.
