Fallen Soldier's Ranger Regiment to Return to East Texas
By Scott Harvey
YANTIS - Members of Sgt. Tanner Higgins’ Army Ranger unit will pass through the area this weekend and plan to visit his family in Yantis.
The 23-year-old Higgins died of injuries sustained when his unit came under enemy fire in Afghanistan in April.
A 2007 graduate of Sulphur Springs High School, he immediately joined the U.S. Army and quickly became a Ranger. Higgins’ graduating class had pledged to honor the fallen soldier by purchasing a plaque or a brick paver in his name for the Hopkins County Veterans Memorial, which was unveiled June 30.
He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, at Hunter Army Airfield, Fort Stewart, Ga.
