False alarm: Flu scare in Hopkins County

Sulphur Springs – A swine flu scare in Hopkins County turns out to be a false alarm.

The Sulphur Springs News Telegram reports a woman traveling from Mexico who was suspected of being infected with the virus was taken off a bus and brought to Hopkins County Memorial Hospital for treatment Wednesday morning. Hospital personnel later determined the traveler did not have influenza.

Sulphur Springs Emergency Management Coordinator Robert Stidham was contacted by fire officials after they were called to Pilot Travel Center, a regular stop for bus routes coming through the city.

Hopkins County Emergency Medical Services technicians took appropriate precautions, Stidham said, wearing protective masks before treating the woman to lessen the chance of exposure to any disease.

After an interview was conducted, they determined the woman did not have flu symptoms.

Still no confirmed cases of swine flu have been reported in Northeast Texas.
