Fannin County Wants to Change Lake's Name

Jun 12, 2018

Texas’ newest lake-to-be could be getting a new name.

The formal name of the lake project at the Bois D’Arc Creek reservoir is North Texas Municipal Lake -- so named by the North Texas Municipal Water District, which broke ground on the project a couple weeks ago. But residents of Fannin County don’t seem to like that very much.

This morning, the County Commissioners’ Court set a formal resolution to call the lake Bois D’Arc Lake, on behalf of county residents.

In a statement, the Water District said it chose the original name to encompass the 13 member cities and other communities served by the district. County resident, however, have publicly stated that they prefer to call it Bois D’Arc Lake, and many apparently thought that’s what the name would be anyway.

The district says a name change is fine, if that’s what the residents want.

According to County Judge Spanky Carter’s office, the county is expected to meet with the water district in July, when the name change could formally take place.
