Fire poses no threat to people or property

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – Commerce Firefighters battled a grass fire Monday afternoon that ignited in the northern section of the city just east of Highway 24/50.

The origin of the blaze is believed along the train tracks, but a cause was unclear.

Fire Chief Brian McNevin says it took crews about 30 minutes to suppress the fire, which had spread to a nearby field. Officials remained on scene for another hour and a half to monitor the situation. McNevin says at no time was any property or any people in danger.

The biggest issue was actually getting to the fire, which was in a dampened area following recent precipitation.

Commerce Firefighters were assisted by crews from Campbell and the Texas Forest Service.
