Delta County first responders were fast to react Thursday night when a caller reported what was believed to be a house fire on the line between Delta, Hunt and Fannin Counties.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. on a foggy, wet evening volunteer firefighters from Pecan Gap, Klondike, Cooper along with the Delta County Sheriff’s deputies were on the scene of a fire at the end of County Road 4917 off of Farm to Market road 1532 and 904.

“At one point we believe the Commerce Department was called back because it was a controlled burn,” said Cooper Fire Chief Leland Howard. “I guess with the weather owner thought it would be a good night to burn some brush piles.”

Several big equipment trucks for the departments managed to maneuver the narrow slippery clay dirt drive.

“The County tries to respond quickly for structure fires especially residential. We had three trucks on the scene,” added Chief Howard. Fortunately, responders were able to return to base in a timely fashion. Callers are advised to be specific as possible when making emergency calls. Controlled burns must be reported in advance to local fire departments.
