Flood Waters Remain In Area

The fishing was good Monday along east Lee Street/Business Highway 69 in Greenville. Chili Gonzalez said he was able to fill up two baskets with catches in about 30 minutes, as he cast his line into the flood waters along the roadway.

Greenville and Hunt County started the work week Monday under flood waters

While the county was fortunate to have escaped the worst of the severe weather during the past weekend, it did receive another extended dose of heavy rainfall.

The Cowleech Fork of the Sabine River in Greenville and the South Fork of the Sabine River near Quinlan remained at flood stage Monday evening, after overflowing their banks Sunday. Majors Field, the City of Greenville Municipal Airport, received almost 4.5 inches of rain between Saturday afternoon and Monday morning, which fell on ground already saturated from multiple earlier rain events.

The flood waters again forced the closure of several roads across the county, including portions of Sockwell Boulevard in North Greenville, until the waters began to recede Monday night.

The east end of Lee Street/Business Highway 67 was again a prime fishing spot Monday, as multiple anglers reported catching their limit in a short amount of time.

The National Weather Service forecast was calling for a dry, but chilly, close to 2015, with temperatures expected to dip near freezing on New Year’s Eve.
