Former Bonham Fire Captain to Serve as Interim Commerce Fire Chief

North Texas E-News
Cpt. Jack Berni receives a round of applause at the April Bonham City Council meeting after announcing his retirement.

COMMERCE - Jack Berni will lead the Commerce Fire Department over the next several months until a full-time chief is appointed.

City Manager Marc Clayton made the announcement this week. Berni, a former captain for the Bonham Fire Department, retired in April after 35 years on the job.

“He made it clear to me he would not be a candidate full time,” Marc Clayton said. “What I’m using Chief Berni to do is to get me just an overall assessment, top to bottom of our department down there. It’ll help me when I do hire a full-time chief.”

Berni’s time as interim chief could last between six to nine months, according to Clayton.

Former Fire Chief Brian McNevin resigned last month to become the director of operations with an Emergency Service District in Smith County.
