Funds sought to pay tribute to deceased instructors

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – A memorial recital is planned this weekend for two Northeast Texas teachers and recent graduates of Texas A&M University-Commerce who were killed in a January car accident.

James and Laci Betterton were the victims of a head-on collision near Caddo Mills due to icy road conditions. The newlyweds each earned their degree in music education. James was employed at a Garland school while Laci worked in Rockwall, each as elementary music instructors.

The music service fraternities, Phi Mu and Mu Phi Epsilon, are hosting the James and Laci Betterton Memorial Recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Finney Concert Hall. Their goal is to raise $3,000 to name two chairs in the Concert Hall for the two alumni. The recital will include solo performances by the faculty and students of A&M-Commerce.

All students and faculty of A&M-Commerce are invited to attend. The recital is free and open to the public. A $10 donation is appreciated. You can also make a donation by sending a check to the Music Department payable to Music Excellence with the James and Laci Betterton Memorial listed on the memo section.
