GEUS warns against electricity-sales scam

By Brad Kellar

Greenville – Officials with the Greenville Electric Utility System are warning residents of a scam involving persons attempting to sell electricity. A notice Tuesday indicated recent reports of individuals approaching consumers at their homes.

GEUS says these scam artists may be targeting customer's of the utility's emPOWER pre-pay program, which is used like a debit or gift card to pay for a specific amount of electricity. There have been reports of someone going door-to-door, claiming they are from GUES, and offering to sell or re-value their cards.

According to GEUS Consumer Services Manager Jimmy Dickey, no one from the company is involved in the door-to-door sales, and anyone who is approached should contact police.
