Greenville Police: Crockett incident was false alarm

The alarm over an adult apparently soliciting a child near Crockett Elementary School in Greenville has been determined to be a false alarm, according to a release from Greenville police.

The incident happened during the evening of Nov. 17. A student walking home from Crockett Elementary observed a black Ford Mustang nearby and heard an adult in the car say “Hey, come here,” police said.

The child then ran back to Crockett Elementary and reported the incident to a teacher, who called the police department, officials said. The child was interviewed by school staff, the release said. Police, using the child’s description, later located the suspect.

It was determined during questioning that the location of the incident was, for many years, the home of the suspect, police said. The words heard by the child were the suspect talking to someone else inside the car, police said. The person in question saw the student running but thought the child was scared by a large dog nearby, police said.

No foul play or offense was intended and the investigation has been closed, police said.
