Greenville superintendent resigns

By Kevin Jefferies

Greenville – Greenville ISD Superintendent William Smith turned in his resignation to the Greenville Board of Trustees last night. Smith had served the district for 35 years but retires after four months of some controversy. New board members Duane May, James Bland, and Dr. Jack Ammons took office this spring and have been critics of Smith's work at times. Smith said that was only part of the reason for his retirement, however, and that he had been planning it for some time. A part-time job offer to make the transition to full retirement and a desire for unity within the school district were also factors in the decision.

Even among his critics, Smith was praised for his 35 years of service to the Greenville ISD.
