‘Grey’ book signing attracts great crowd

The early bird gets the worm or in this case the autographed copy of E L James’ newest book Grey – fourth in the Fifty Shades of Grey series – that was the case Saturday morning at The Bookworm Box on Main Street in Sulphur Springs. This novel channels the view point of leading character Christian Grey on a love story that has spellbound millions of readers around the world.

Fans spent the night and awoke early to form a line around the corner to be one of the over 500 copies signed and sold with proceeds going to charity. Women – and men – alike from all across the globe who follow not only James but her friend and fellow author Colleen Hoover, owner of the bookstore attended. Some fans were from as far as Korea, Canada, Seattle, Philadelphia, Arkansas to areas of Texas from Houston, Georgetown, Dallas, Waco, Tyler, Denton along with locals and many more.

“This is insane. We never expected this kind of crowd. Well we sort of did because we knew how many tickets we sold but I didn’t expect them to sell that fast,” said Colleen Hoover on the one-day sellout and turnout. “The amount of people that came from out of state was surprising. We had a man come in substitute for his wife and he was from Maryland.” Hopkins County and Sulphur Springs law enforcement were patrolling the large crowd but the mutual bond seemed to forge even more friendships despite enduring the East Texas heat.

This was truly a unique opportunity with two New York Times Best Seller List authors – James and Hoover – in one location at The Bookworm Box, which has only just been opened. This one-of-a-kind store, The Bookworm Box, is Hoover’s way to give back on a larger scale and so far it is showing huge promise.

“She [E L James] is such an awesome human being and so many people came out from far and wide to meet her. But I'd say the other star of today is the town of Sulphur Springs, Texas! From the local businesses who showed us their support, the Sulphur Springs Police Department, the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office and our wonderful police Captain, Jason Ricketson,” said Hoover to fans on Facebook. “E L James was blown away by the graciousness of the readers and the wonderful community…. I would say we're good to go for many future signings with other authors. Today was Fifty Shades of Great!”

The soft spoken author, James was delighted by the community of Sulphur Springs from the hospitality to the dining to the glass bathrooms.
