Guilty pleas entered in church fires

By Scott Harvey

Tyler – As expected, the two men charged in a string of East Texas church fires have pleaded guilty.

Jason Borque and Daniel Mccallister admitted to setting the fires between mid-January and February that burned five Smith County churches. They also pleaded guilty to trying to set fires in several other churches.

The arsons began on New Year's Day with a fire in Athens and eventually stretched across hundreds of square miles in Smith, Van Zandt and Henderson counties.

The two men, childhood friends, were arrested in late February. Sentencing is set for January 10. Both men could face up to life in prison.
