Heavy rains, hail and power outages from Wednesday storm

By Scott Harvey

– A strong patch of storms seemed to appear out of nowhere late Wednesday afternoon, as Hunt County was placed under a severe thunderstorm warning.

The storms would effect most contiguous counties as well, including Delta, Fannin, Hopkins, Lamar, Rains and Van Zandt Counties. More than 2,500 people were estimated to have lost power at some point. The cities biggest hit by power failure were Commerce, Greenville, Quinlan, Sulphur Springs and Bonham and their surrounding communities.

The region did receive some much needed rain, however. Golf ball sized hail; lightning and winds in excess of 60 mph were also associated with the storm.

Stan McKey with Oncor says around 2,100 customers lost power, but it was restored within 45 minutes. In Greenville, nearly 600 people were without power for a period of time.
