Highway 19 accident takes local woman’s life

An early morning emergency call from State Highway 19 near the South Sulphur River and Delta/Hopkins County lines revealed a fatality in an accident involving a silver compact car and a bob tail dump truck. Preliminary reports show it appeared to be head-on collision and on impact the vehicles caught fire while in the ditch on the west side of highway.

First responders including EMS were on the scene quickly as they were stationed in Cooper when the call came in at approximately 7:45 a.m. Thursday morning, Aug. 13.

Judge Bud Skinner pronounced the victim – the driver, 61-year old Vivian Yvonne Brewer of Cooper, dead at the scene. The Air Evac Lifeteam emergency helicopter landed on the closed highway and careflighted her critically injured husband, O.G. Brewer, from the scene to a Plano hospital. The AK Gillis of Sulphur Springs truck driver, Vincent Wilcox, was taken by ambulance to Hopkins County Memorial Hospital.

The collision of the two vehicles was with such force debris was found well into the trees. The dump truck did not appear to be carrying any cargo. Delta County Sheriff’s officers, constable, Cooper and Enloe Volunteer fire fighters and rescue workers along with EMS and Department of Public Safety officers were all on the scene.

Traffic was re-routed over Cooper Lake. Emergency crews cleared the scene at 11:10 a.m. Thursday, re-opening the highway. Speed limit entering Delta County is 75 miles per hour.

Funeral services for Vivian Yvonne Brewer, 61, of Cooper will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, August 21, 2015 at Delta Funeral Home Chapel in Cooper. Visitation Thursday, August 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at funeral home.
