Hopkins County approved to pursue jail grant

By Scott Harvey

Sulphur Springs – Hopkins County has been approved to move forward on a $17 million grant application for a new jail.

The Ark-Texas Council of Governments Thursday voted unanimously to support the item.

If approved by U.S. Department of Agriculture, the grant will require 25 percent in funds from the county, which amounts to just over $4 million.

If the public agrees to its end of the funding, coupled with approval of the grant, crews look to construct a 195 bed unit. The current jail facility can only house 100 inmates.
