LATEST UPDATE: Former Hopkins County Sheriff's investigator Daniel Winn is back behind bars after being free on a $25,000 bond. Texas Rangers served him with 13 felony warrants (12 for tampering with evidence and one for tampering with a witness).
The Sulphur Springs News-Telegram reports the new bond for Winn totaled $130,000, $10,000 for each of the 13 offenses.
Hopkins County District Attorney Will Ramsay said a special investigator would be called in to handle the case against the former deputy.
UPDATE: Hopkins County criminal investigator, Daniel Madison Winn, was arrested last Wednesday for charges of tampering with physical evidence which is a third-degree felony. Winn was a 10-year veteran the Hopkins County Sheriff’s office specializing in child exploitation and was arrested in connection with the disappearance of controlled substance missing and failing a drug test.
Hopkins County Chief Investigator Lewis Tatum noticed some discrepancies, and he called in the Texas Rangers, who are currently conducting an investigation.
“Unfortunately this happens too often and so many departments allow officers to resign and move on. We want the citizens of Hopkins County to know if you break the law, you will pay the price,” said Chief Investigator Tatum on the arrest of the 35-year old officer.
Winn posted his $25,000 bond and was released from Hopkins County Jail. He is the second officer to be arrested for tampering with drugs from evidence.
A special prosecutor will be brought in to handle the case, reported District Attorney Will Ramsay.
PREVIOUSLY REPORTED: A Hopkins County investigator has been arrested by local sheriff's deputies, according to a report by Tyler-based KLTV.
Investigator Daniel Madison Winn was arrested on Oct. 22 and charged with tampering with evidence with the intent to impair an investigation, the report said. Bond has been set at $25,000, the report said.
Winn, a 10-year veteran of the department, failed an Oct. 21 drug test, the report said. Suspicions raised by that failure led to findings which in turn led to the arrest, the report said. The investigation is being conducted by the Texas Rangers, the report said.
