Hopkins County Wants More Aggressive Action to Stop South Sulphur River Floods

This morning the Hopkins County Commissioners Court formally asked the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to be more aggressive in keeping a flood-prone area of the county cleaner of debris.

Residents have long complained about the amounts of brush, tree parts, and general debris that dam up the area surrounding the Highway 17 bridge whenever it storms. Floodwaters from the South Sulphur River back up and have been known to shut down the roads in that area. Neighbors often go out and clear the debris themselves.

The commissioners say they hope TCEQ will work to alleviate flooding issues caused by the natural debris.
