Hundreds to Lose Jobs as Plant Announces Closure

Jerrod Knight

GREENVILLE - Tough news for the local economy as officials with Greenville’s Newell Rubbermaid plant say they intend to close their doors next year.

Employees were notified of the decision during a recent meeting. According to Company Spokesperson David Doolittle, the plan is to move production to other plants in the U.S.

The plant employs some 500 people, including about 490 full time plus several seasonal and temporary workers. Newell Rubbermaid has been in Greenville for more than 30 years, producing and distributing a wide variety of plastics products and related items.  Operations will close by June 2012.

The company says they will provide assistance to outgoing employees, including supplemental unemployment pay.
