Hunt County Hotels Taking In Harvey Refugees

National Weather Service
National Weather Service
Hurricane Harvey couldcause severe damage to coastal Texas.

Even though Hunt County is at least a four-hour drive from Houston on a normal day, hotel managers in Greenville and Commerce say they’ve either booked reservations or taken calls from several Gulf Coast families evacuating Hurricane Harvey.

Kailob Jones, front desk manager at Holiday in Express and Suites in Greenville says that by Friday afternoon he’d already checked in two families from Galveston and was expecting three more families by the end of the day.

Mindy Ortega, assistant manager at Magnuson Hotel Commerce, says the hotel has taken nearly a dozen calls from evacuees from the coast. One family from near Corpus Christi ---- at least a seven-hour drive from Commerce --- is coming to spend the weekend.

Both Jones and Ortega say their hotels have plenty of room for Harvey evacuees. Likewise for Greenville's Super 8, where front desk manager Shawna Coker says she's taken only one inquiry from a coast family.

Other hotels in Hunt and Rockwall counties say they've not heard from anyone looking to get away from Gulf Coast cities.
