Hunt County man scheduled for execution

By Brad Kellar

Hunt County – A Hunt County man is scheduled for execution after spending nearly three decades on death row. David Lee Powell is scheduled to be executed Tuesday for the 1978 murder of Austin police officer Ralph Ablanedo. Powell had been stopped on a traffic violation when he opened fire with a Russian-made AK-47 machine gun, hitting the officer at least four times. At the time of the shooting, Powell was a student at the University of Texas, where he enrolled after graduating as valedictorian from Campbell High School.
