Hurricane refugees find Commerce

By Kevin Jefferies

Commerce – Some Hurricane Katrina refugees have found a place to stay in Commerce and the community is coming to their aid. The Holiday Inn Express is now hosting more than 50 people who have escaped the disaster in New Orleans. More than half of the 59 rooms at the hotel are filled with families and individuals who began arriving Saturday, evacuating New Orleans ahead of Hurricane Katrina. The Commerce Independent School District has set up computers for the families to use and food has been donated by local restaurants as well as the First United Methodist Church and Commerce Chamber.

Texas A&M University-Commerce has donated some clothing and Director of A&M-Commerce Corporate and Community Relations Penny Belcher has been compiling information on how to help. Anyone interested in giving to hurricane relief efforts can contact Belcher at 903.468.8170.
