Ike evacuees asked to stay put for now

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – Local emergency management crews are continuing to ask evacuees of Hurricane Ike to stay where they are for now.

Although Ike has come and gone, the Texas coast is just now assessing damages and making preparations for clean-up. Power outage repairs and debris removal reportedly may take weeks.

Emergency management personnel from Commerce, Hunt County, and the American Red Cross will continue to provide services to the evacuees who are currently sheltered in the city, however both shelters have reached capacity and no more evacuees can be taken at this time.

Individuals who are currently being sheltered in the Commerce area and have not registered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) can do so by calling 903-621-FEMA or online at www.fema.gov.

Additional information can be obtained by contacting the American Red Cross - Dallas Chapter at 214-678-4800 or by dialing 2-1-1.
