Illegal dumping suspected in Hunt County

By Scott Harvey

Caddo Mills – Acting on a tip, Hunt County authorities this week discovered what is believed the site of illegal dumping in Caddo Mills.

At least three leaking barrels that smelled of petroleum products were dug up along FM 36. More barrels are believed buried at the site. It is unclear who may have dumped the materials.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is scheduled to investigate the matter. The TCEQ apparently received a similar tip last June, but nothing was found when the state came out and dug up parts of the property.

While the site is right behind a residential neighborhood, Hunt County Commissioner Jay Atkins said residents should not be concerned about their drinking water. He said all of the homes are hooked up to Caddo Mills' water system.
