Inmate charged with arson after jail cell fire

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – A Commerce man, already in police custody on a local warrant, is facing additional charges after setting fire to the mattress in his jail cell.

City personnel were able to quickly extinguish the Thursday fire after Curtis Laron Williams reportedly was able to set fire to a bible and toilet paper on the top of his bed.

Williams was transported to Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville to get treatment for smoke inhalation. He was later transported to the Hunt County Jail where he was booked for arson, with bond set at $40,000.

The jail facility suffered some smoke damage but it is now up and running again.

It was not immediately clear how Williams was able to set the fire.
