It's time to shout 'Bra-Zinga'

Brad Kellar

More than 130  creatively decorated bras will be on display along Lee Street in downtown Greenville this evening, during the sixth annual Bras for the Cause.

Funds raised during this year’s event will again benefit the Hunt Regional Healthcare Foundation, Janice’s Closet and for the purchase and operation of Hunt Regional Healthcare’s Tubby Adkisson Mobile Mammography Bus. Janice’s Closet is a special place at Hunt Regional Hospital where financially challenged women who are battling breast cancer and other cancers can receive needed items such as breast prostheses, professionally fitted bras and wigs, compression garments, patient treatment gowns and other supplies, which are provided at no charge.

Starting at 6 p.m., the bras will be displayed between The Texan Theater and Landon Winery. Voting is open until 8:30 p.m.

Shameless campaigning ahead of time is being encouraged. Each $1 buys one vote in support of a bra. Voting cards, in denominations of from $1 to $100, will be available for sale; as will souvenir wine glasses and insulated pink, Solo-style cups with the Bras for the Cause logo.

Voters are asked to bring cash or checks to pay for their ballots tonight. All checks should be made out to “Hunt Regional Healthcare Foundation.”

The Tubby Adkisson Memorial Mammography Coach will be on site and will be offering screenings between 1 and 7 p.m. today. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 903-408-5010.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to begin at approximately 9:30 p.m., where the top five vote-getting bras will be awarded, the top sponsors will be recognized and this year’s grand total will be announced.

For those unable to make it this evening, or who may want to get an advance start, each of the 139 bras are available for viewing and voting online at www.huntregional.org/foundation/bras_for_the_cause/2014_bras.aspx

New this year is a “Remembrance Tree”, which has been set up inside Uptown Forum, one of the locations hosting the Bras for the Cause.

This year’s Bras for the Cause also carries a theme of “Someone You Know Has Cancer” and individuals are invited to write down the names of their loved ones and any personal thoughts on a piece of paper in the shape of an angel, to hang on the tree. The angels come in three colors; pink for those fighting cancer, purple for those who have survived cancer and white for those who lost the battle.

The trees will also be located at the  Lou and Jack Finney Cancer Center at Hunt Regional Medical Center and at L-3  Mission Integration. The angels will be collected and displayed at Janice’s Closet.

The previous Bras for the Cause events have raised more than $190,000 and a record number of sponsors have signed on for the 2014 edition.
