During the Monday morning meeting of the Delta County Commissioners, Delta County Judge Herb Brookshire pleasantly announced the Delta County Jail has passed the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. The letter stated this “acknowledges the excellent work on the jail” and the certificate represents the compliance and “outstanding leadership achieved by the officers… maintaining a safe and secure facility.” The letter also extended appreciation to the Commissioners Court, who are “vital in the support of the Jail.”

“We can be proud of this achievement,” said Delta County Judge Herb Brookshire. “This speaks well of the Sheriff’s office and the County.” He congratulated Delta County Sheriff Ricky Smith on the Jail Standards success.

After a motion by Precinct 3 Commissioner Loyd Vandygriff and a second by Precinct 1 Commissioner Rip Templeton led to a 4-0 vote in favor of Precinct 4 Commissioner Mark Brantley’s appointment as the Judge Pro-Tem, who will hold Commissioners Court and other official duties in the absence of the Judge.

Judge Brookshire also announced the supplies for the new roof installation by RBS will be delivered this week. He has also ordered new carpet for the District Courtroom and Justice of the Peace office.

Delta County Tax Assessor-Collector Dawn Stewart presented the tax collection contract with Cooper ISD. The Court approved the agenda item.

The Court approved to allow Lamar Electric to cross County Road 2050.

Sheriff Ricky Smith gave his monthly report stating the current Jail population of 12, holding steady at an average of 10-12 inmates. He said officers were investigating a rash of burglaries.

The Delta County Sheriff’s office and the local volunteer fire departments will be working together on the Blue and Red Santa event from now until Dec. 20, finishing with a stew dinner with entertainment with cover charge of cash donation or toy.

“So far we have received 25 bicycles,” said Delta County Sheriff Ricky Smith. “We also plan on collecting on the Square in Cooper.”

Another announcement was an invitation to Eighth Judicial District Attorney Will Ramsay’s Christmas Open House at 110 Main Street in Sulphur Springs. There will be beverages and desserts from 2-5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12.

Accepted into the minutes were the continuing education training certificates earned by Precinct 3 Commissioner Loyd Vandygriff. The Court accepted the minutes from Nov. 24 with minor corrections into record.
