Joan Mathis named PJC's Distinguished Alumna

PARIS – The longtime Paris Junior College English instructor and 1958 PJC graduate will be honored during the annual homecoming festivities November 11-12.

Paris Junior College enrolled their first black student in 1954 after Mathis' father worked with Sen. A.M. Aikin to desegregate the college.

She began her professional career at the school in 1975 teaching developmental English, English composition, and American literature and has served as Coordinator of the Writing Lab since she was named to the position in 1985.

This year marks Mathis' 49th year in public education.
