KETR won first place in its division in the categories of light feature, serious feature, website and use of actuality-production.KETR, a 100,000-watt FM public radio station operated by Texas A&M University-Commerce, received four first-place honors in the 2012 Texas Associated Press Broadcasters awards. KETR competes in Division B in the TAPB's system, which groups stations based on market size.
In the actuality-production category, the TAPB judges a broadcast product's use of recorded sound. KETR's Matt Meinke won first place in actuality-production for his work on KETR's The Grin-N-Bearit Show. Meinke also won second place in actuality-production for his audio highlight package of the Commerce High-Farmersville football game.
First place in the website category went to ketr.org, which is managed by station general manager Jerrod Knight and station staff.
First place in the serious feature category was awarded to Knight for his "Bob Aikin: In Memory."
First place in the light feature category was awarded to Knight and former KETR news director Scott Harvey for "The Lions Take New York."
In sports, KETR's John Mark Dempsey, Kevin Jefferies and Harvey received honorable mention in the best sports play-by-play category for their Commerce High football coverage. Jefferies is the station's operations manager and Dempsey is associate professor of radio-television at A&M-Commerce and head of the Department of Mass Media, Communication and Theatre.
KETR began broadcasting as a public-radio service of East Texas State University in 1975.
