Kristofferson to play theater benefit

NPR

A big name in both Nashville and Hollywood has been recruited to help raise money toward the project to renovate a historic downtown Greenville theater.

Barbara Horan of Austin announced Thursday that tickets are expected to go on sale next week for an appearance by actor, singer and songwriter Kris Kristofferson, who will be in Greenville Oct. 12 for a benefit concert for Friends of the Texan Inc., a not-for=profit corporation for the preservation of The Texan Theater and educational programs. Tickets for the “Intimate evening with Kris Kristofferson” will be $500 each and includes dinner and a show.

Horan has been responsible for the effort and has promised a venue featuring “exceptional food with remarkable entertainment.”

She has envisioned an intimate dinner and entertainment experience for about 250 people when the renovations are completed.

The Texan is included among the League of Historic American Theaters and at one time was one of four downtown Greenville movie theaters, also including the Colonial, the Rialto and the Rita. The Texan was probably the last to close, sometime in the 1970s.

The theater’s marquee has been completely restored and is being lit for special occasions until the gala opening event.
