Patrick Wayne McMahan
Hopkins County Sheriff's office

Sulphur Springs businessman Gary Maynard, 66, was shot and killed in his home Saturday night, according to police. Patrick Wayne McMahan and Cody Scott Shaw, both Hopkins County residents, were recently apprehended and charged with the murder of Maynard, police said. McMahan and Shaw are employees of Maynard’s business, Maynard Custom Tree Landscaping Service.

According to reports, Maynard was alone when he was shot with a deer rifle sometime between 7:45 and 9 p.m. in his home located on County Road 2301 in Sulphur Springs. Hopkins County Chief Investigator Lewis Tatum said Maynard was asleep in his home when he was shot.

“He [Maynard] was a very nice man. The men robbed him [stealing cash and numerous chainsaws] before killing him. They both confessed on Sunday; however, we are still continuing to investigate,” said Chief Investigator Tatum, who said they received the call at 11 p.m. Saturday night by his wife who had just returned from work.

Hopkins County Sheriff’s officers worked swiftly and were assisted by Texas Rangers and the Sulphur Springs Police Department. They located the first suspect within two hours and had the second by Sunday. Shaw, 26, was arrested in Rains County and is being held in the Hopkins County Jail on a two million dollar bond. McMahan, 31, is also in the Hopkins County Jail on several counts also on a two million dollar bond.

Funeral services for Gary Maynard are pending with Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
