Last Week's Rains Did Not Fix the Drought in NE Texas

Feb 26, 2018

According to the Texas Water Development Board, Northeast Texas is still in a state of moderate drought, despite all the rain that fell on the area last week.

While the rain was heavy enough to cause flooding and road closures, moderate drought conditions remain. However, flooding rains in much of the state did break a streak of nine straight weeks in which the drought had expanded across Texas. This week, conditions are exactly where they were a week ago, with 71 percent of the state still affected by drought.

According to the TWDB, the Panhandle did see extreme drought conditions drop by 2 percent as of Monday. But extreme drought still covers 11 percent of the state.

More soaking rains and thunderstorms are expected Tuesday through Thursday across Northeast Texas.
