Lions Close 1525 Tournament With Tough Loss to CSU-Pueblo 55-52

Jasmine Baker

Texas A&M-Commerce closed the inaugural 1525 Tournament with a tight loss to No. 5 Colorado St.-Pueblo Thunderwolves, 55-52. Despite the Lions coming out aggressively to start the game with a 14-0 run, it wasn’t able to finish the second half strong. Ultimately it was a tale of two halves.

At times in the first half the Lions looked flawless in transition, shooting 20 of their 24 points first quarter points from the field. A&M-Commerce continues to struggle from the field, shooting just 30% Saturday night and 29% of free throws. The Lions finished with 14 fast break points for the game.

The T’Wolves charged back in the second quarter with an 18-2 run, putting them within seven points at halftime, 29-22.

CSU-Pueblo carried that momentum into the third quarter capitalizing off Lions mistakes. It went on another run, 12-2 for 3:50. A&M-Commerce defense seemed stagnant, allowing the T’Wolves to keep the contest close.

Wise hit the Lions’ first 3pt of the game with two minutes left in the fourth quarter. The team  shot just 9% for the contest.

A steal and layup by Melanie Ransom put the Lions back within one point, 51-50.

Taylor Long sealed the win for CSU-Pueblo with 18 seconds left, shooting a layup extending its lead by three points. Long shot two additional free throws after Price fouled out with 9pts and 13 reb., 55-52.

CSU-Pueblo’s Molly Rohrer led all scorers with 16 pts and 7 reb.

Artaejah Gay led the Lions with 15 pts and 6 reb.
