Lions Handle Angelo State in 34-20 Victory

Drew Ivery

Texas A&M-Commerce overcame first half offensive woes to get their second home win in a row against Angelo State Saturday, 34-20.

ASU’s defense gave the Lions all it could handle, limiting it to just 3 of 9 in third down conversions. Although its first series of the game saw a bad snap in the red zone, junior wide receiver Darrion Landry put the Lions on the board with a 49-yd touchdown, 7-3.

In the second quarter, A&M-Commerce settled for a Kristov Martinez 23-yd field goal, 10-3. Senior wide receiver Shawn Hooks returned a 24-yd punt, leading to a 11-yd  touchdown by junior wide receiver Marquis Wimberly, 17-3. Before going into the half, ASU’s quarterback Charlie Rotherham threw a 23-yd touchdown pass to Wesley Lewis, 17-10. The Lions finished the first half completing 21 of 28 passing for 267 yards.

Wimberly sparked the Lions offense at the beginning of the third quarter catching a 51-yd pass, leading to his 7-yd touchdown, 24-10.

Landry closed the game with an impressive 33-yd touchdown, 34-20. Redshirt freshman defensive back Dominique Ramsey sealed the win for the Lions with a 25-yd interception.

Greenville’s own redshirt freshman running back Carandal Hale ran for 104 yards total. A&M-Commerce receiving core handled the ball well, finishing with 218 yards and 4 touchdowns respectively. Landry went for 105 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Wimberley had 113 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Lions head to West Texas A&M next Saturday at 6 p.m.
