Lions hope to shock TexAnns one more time

Freshman Alize Pegue leads the Lions in assists with 2.7 per game.

The Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball team will tip off in the opening game of the Lone Star Conference basketball championship tournament in Allen in a game that will be heard live on KETR. During the regular season, A&M-Commerce split two games, with the Lions winning the last game of the regular season on March 1.

OPENING TIP

For the second straight season the Lions are the seventh seed in the Lone Star Conference tournament. The Lions will look to beat a regionally ranked team wearing purple and white in the opening round for back-to-back seasons after beating Abilene Christian last season.

A&M-Commerce ended a six game losing streak to Tarleton State with their win in the regular season finale. The Lions have played the TexAnns twice in the Lone Star Tournament (2006, 2007) with the Lions getting wins in each of those games. Like this season the two meetings occurred in the quaterfinals.

Alize Pegue is leading the Lions in total assists (69) and assists per game (2.7) currently and would be the first freshman since teammate La'Tisha Hearne, steals (30) and spg (1.2) in 2011-12, to lead the Lions in a category in her frehman season.

If Pegue could lead the Lions in either total assists or assists per game she would be the first freshman since Jessica Douglas in 1997-98 to do it.

Since the Lions loss to West Texas, A&M-Commerce has not trailed at any point in the their two wins over Texas Woman's and Tarleton State. The Lions were never even tied with the TexAnns on Saturday.

With the back-to-back wins last week the Lions are now tied for the second longest winning streak in the LSC with A&M-Kingsville. West Texas owns the longest at 3.

REGIONALLY RANKED WINS

With the 74-69 win over Tarleton State on Saturday the Lions have now won games versus regionally ranked opponents in two straight seasons. Last season's win came versus Abilene Christian in the LSC Tournament. This season the Lions have also beaten Texas Woman's and Midwestern State, who are both regionally ranked.
