West Texas A&M defeated A&M-Commerce 87-76 in a Lone Star Conference semifinal game at the Allen Events Center Friday afternoon.
The Cinderella slipper fit the Lions for a couple of days, but the story of the 2012-13 season came to an end for the Texas A&M University-Commerce women’s basketball team against West Texas A&M.
The Lady Buffs (20-11) advanced to the conference final against either Midwestern State or Tarleton State at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Allen Events Center, site of this year’s Lone Star Conference tournament.
The Lions finished the season 11-16. A&M-Commerce, picked to finish last in the 11-team Lone Star Conference in the preseason poll, finished seventh in the conference standings. The Lions stunned no. 2-seed Abilene Christian in the conference quarterfinals on Wednesday with an 80-79 defeat of the Wildcats.
Friday’s game was effectively decided in the first half, during which the Lady Buffs took control with a 13-0 run that gave them a double-digit lead they never relinquished. WT led 46-29 at the break.
A&M-Commerce head coach Nicole Anderson earned Co-Coach of the Year honors in the Lone Star Conference this season. Before this year, the Lions had not made a conference tournament appearance since 2009.
