Lions start season this weekend

By Kevin Jefferies

Commerce –

The A&M-Commerce Lions hit the road Saturday to kick off season two under head coach Scotty Conley. The Lions have moved into the Lone Star Conference North Division this season and are the only Texas team in the division. A&M-Commerce returns eight starters on offense and six on defense, but has some new faces in some key positions.

Kyle Westerberg, a junior transfer from Missouri Western, takes over the helm as quarterback for A&M-Commerce's high-flying spread offense. He'll have some good targets, too, as first team ALL-LSC South receiver Victor Bennet returns to the Lions. 6'5 Toussaint Henderson and 6'2 Cedric Patt also returns to the Lions, rounding out one of the strongest receiving corps in the conference.

Defensively, the Lions will have a mixed group of new and old faces. The defensive line brings experience and talent while the linebacking corps is almost entirely comprised of players new to A&M-Commerce. The secondary returns mostly intact from last season but new players are challenging those posititions.

The Lions kick off the season at Southern Arkansas this Saturday. Catch the action live on 88-9 starting at 6:30.
