Texas A&M University-Commerce senior linebacker Tu’u Liu has been named Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week. A&M-Commerce defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville 55-20 at AT&T Stadium on Sept. 20.
Liu snatched two interceptions against the Javelinas. Both interceptions were on passes that Liu tipped, then caught. Liu ran his second interception back 35 yards for a touchdown to give the Lions a 31-13 lead. It was the first defensive score for the Lions this season and also thwarted the Javelinas' attempt to close the scoring gap to within less than a touchdown.
After one Lone Star Conference game, A&M-Commerce (1-0, 2-1) sits in a four-way tie for first place in the circuit with Angelo State (1-0, 2-0), Midwestern State (1-0, 2-0) and Tarleton State (1-0, 1-1).
The Lone Star Conference has one team ranked in the American Football Coaches Association NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll: Midwestern State, which is ranked 18th.
Two other LSC schools also received votes. Tarleton State dropped out of the Top 25 after losing 37-31 to non-conference opponent Florida Tech, also at AT&T Stadium on Sept. 20. However, the Texans did receive votes, as did A&M-Commerce. Based on vote totals, Tarleton State is unofficially 27th nationally, while A&M-Commerce is unofficially 35th in the nation.
In other LSC action on Sept. 20, Angelo State topped McMurry 45-14, Midwestern State beat Eastern New Mexico 42-14 and West Texas A&M defeated non-conference opponent Shorter 27-19.
The Lions will travel to Eastern New Mexico (0-1, 2-1) for their next game on Sept. 27. Pregame coverage is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. on KETR.
