Local cities to canvas election results this week

By Scott Harvey

Commerce, Sulphur Springs – This week several recently elected persons to either school board or city council seats will be officially sworn in.

While other area cities last week already canvassed their elections from May 9, both Commerce and Sulphur Springs are among the cities this week to do it.

On Monday, both Randy Starks and Medley Wilson will take their oaths of office during the Commerce ISD regular session, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Middle School Library. Starks was elected to Place 6, while Wilson was re-elected to Place 7.

For the Commerce City Council, Place 1 Incumbent Tony Henry and Place 3 Incumbent Richard Hill will be sworn in during the council's regular session Tuesday at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

Also on Monday, Place 1-elect Craig Johnson will be sworn in for the Sulphur Springs City Council. A runoff is scheduled for June 13 between Place 3 candidates Bradley Edge and Incumbent Clay Walker. Both Edge and Walker were the top two vote-getters out of five total candidates, but neither was able to obtain the 51 percent needed to be elected. Early voting for that race begins Monday, June 1 and runs through Tuesday, June 9.
