Local fire departments keeping busy

By Cindy Roller

Delta County – Delta County firefighters are among the dozens of local agencies on high alert this week as the threat of massive fires loom. Crews spent the holiday weekend trying to extinguish several fires in and around the county.

On Saturday five area departments were called in to fight a four-hour house fire on Waco Street in Cooper. The structure was a vacant at the time and the cause is under investigation.

Then on Sunday, swaying power lines due to high winds sparked a six-acre grass fire on County Road 4230.

Another grass fire occurred near the Cooper Lake area on Monday, but was quickly contained. However, Cooper Fire Chief Charles Ruzicka says it doesn't take long before some of these blazes could get out of control. Just take the Bastrop fires, for example.

Citizens are reminded to abide by the burn ban that is in effect.
