Local firefighters finish 18th in climb event

By Scott Harvey

Dallas – A group of Greenville Firefighters finish 18th in the Fight for Air Climb, held last week at the Renaissance Tower in Dallas. The event is a vertical race to climb 53 floors and drew about 650 competitors from across the country.

The race raises funds and awareness to support education, research, and advocacy programs for clean air, and to mitigate the ill effects of poor air quality in order to protect those with asthma, emphysema, lung cancer and other chronic lung disease. Participants support issues critical to family health - improving air quality, eliminating lung disease, and keeping kids tobacco free.

Greenville Firefighters Jeremy Powell, Stephen Langford, Derek Sheets, Rusty Erwin, and Colby Estes competed in the event wearing full firefighter gear. The team finished 18th in their first ever stair climb.

Stephen Langford climbed the 53 stories in just 9 minutes, 50 seconds, winning the firefighter division.
