Local programs to aid area students

By Scott Harvey, Brad Kellar

The organization Christians Make a Difference will be handing out free gift cards, certificates for haircuts and basic school supplies to students of the Commerce Independent School District.

The event takes place Saturday morning from 8 a.m. to noon at the Norris Community Center in Commerce, located at 1007 Ross St. Students must be accompanied by a parent who can validate their enrollment in CISD. A form of identification must also be provided.

There will also be free school supplies available this weekend in Greenville. The Fifth Annual Tools for School event is scheduled for Saturday at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Greenville.

The program will provide 1,200 free backpacks filled with school supplies to economically disadvantaged students in the Greenville area. Families with children in kindergarten through sixth grade at Greenville ISD, Phoenix, Greenville Christian School and Mineral Heights are invited to come to the church starting at 8 a.m. Saturday. Backpacks are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
